i am urging residents of kalispell to not patronize psychologist dr thomas colyer. dr tom colyer is a fraud who has the ability and desire to destroy the lives of those he preys on and i know this from first hand experience. While there are a few psychologists and mental health professionals who actually like 'helping people' and provide badly needed services, dr tom colyer is not one of them. dr colyer is the most incompetent, reckless and professionally negligent psychologist i've ever encountered. there are a lot of problems with dr colyer but i'll just point out two. he's been known to not be available for prearranged appointments and he gets bored with his patients rather quickly and that means when he gets tired of you and your problems he'll terminate your treatment with little or no notice. his defense is always the same - he's done all he is 'required' to do. terminating services on a whim for his patients already in crisis is good for dr. colyers comfort but irreparably crippling and destructive for his patients. blood is dripping from the hands of dr colyer and the only way to prevent it from happening again is to destroy his practice. there's a reason why it's a crime to aid and abet criminals. the willful destruction of so many lives of the unsuspecting by tom colyer is a perfect example why. by referring your members to dr thomas colyer you are 'aiding and abetting a criminal' The government too must share in the responsibility because they allow him to be licensed year after year. clearly dr colyers professional and ethical standards are not illegal, but they certainly are immoral. shame on the government and shame on the psychology profession who are also part of the problem because patients who have had their lives destroyed by even their own members are the least of their concerns. their focus is on protecting their dues paying members and in this case that's dr thomas colyer. for them it's just an economic issue. but this is much too high a price for his patients to pay. neither the government or the profession are going to protect the lives and interest of patients who get victimized by his reckless practice so it's up to you and me and all those people who need these kinds of professional services to not patronize dr colyer and instead find a legitimate psychologist elsewhere. and don't forget that by dr tom colyer's own admission, and one he very proudly makes, he only does the minimal that he is 'required' to do and on that point the law is woefully inadequate. best case scenerio is that it's ONLY inadequate. unfortunately for the patients he abuses it's usually life ending. would a heart surgeon walk out in the middle of performing open heart surgery on his patient? of course not! if he did he would be forever removed and separated from the rest of society and never see daylight again and that would be the right thing to do. i'm asking you to do the right thing by ceasing to refer your familiy and friends to dr thomas colyer. some people can benefit from these kinds of services when administered by honorable and legitimate professionals. dr thomas colyer is not an honorable or legitimate professional. when his criminal and disgraceful practices are exposed to light the mental health community will hold him accountable. i hope you show the kalispell mental health community that you have their best interest at heart by not patronizing and sacrificing their lives to the unethical practices of dr thomas colyer.

How Social Security Affects Your Retirement

Retirement How Social Security Affects Your Retirement

Image: http://www.retirementdoctor.com/advisors/LibertyArticles/images/1217image1.jpg
When...

Retirement How Social Security Affects Your Retirement

When contemplating retirement, you, like many other people today, may be counting on Social Security benefits to provide you with a basic level of income. The age at which you choose to retire is an important part of the equation. In addition, there are many other issues to consider when making that choice.

Some of these issues include the following: 1) How would an early retirement, for example at age 62 vs. age 65, affect your Social Security benefits? 2) How will those benefits be taxed? and 3) Is it in your best interest to continue working to earn extra income when your benefits could be reduced based on how much you earn?

What’s the Maximum?

As most people realize, Social Security provides only a base level of income. The maximum benefit for a person who retires in 2008 at full retirement age (age 65 and 10 months) is $2,185 per month. In comparison, the maximum benefit in 2006 was $2,116 per month. It is important to note that the benefit for a non-working spouse is only 50% of that amount.

Should You Delay Retirement?

If you delay retirement past your full retirement age, your monthly benefit will increase, based on the age at which you elect to take retirement benefits. But, upon attainment of age 70, the benefit increase no longer applies, even if you continue to delay payment.

Taking benefits at age 62 (considered early retirement) is appealing to many people. However, some continue working and earning additional money to supplement basic Social Security income. Here is where you need to be careful. When you do earn additional income, you may forfeit some of your benefits if you earn more than the maximum amount allowed. If you decide to take early retirement benefits from Social Security at age 62, your monthly benefit amount will be permanently decreased by 20% to 30%, based on your full retirement age. If you are under the full retirement age, receive Social Security benefits, and earn additional income, your benefits would be reduced by $1 for each $2 you earn over $13,560 in 2008. The year in which you attain full retirement age, your benefits would be reduced by $1 for every $3 earned over a certain amount ($36,120 in 2008). Upon attainment of full retirement age, you may earn as much as you like and Social Security benefits are not reduced.

Full Retirement Age—It’s Changing

For a long time, the retirement age has been 65. Due to longer life expectancies, that age will increase in gradual steps until it reaches age 67. This change began in the year 2000 and affects people born in 1938 and later. Age 62 remains the earliest you may begin to receive Social Security retirement benefits.

For Your Information

The Social Security Administration (SSA) provides a free service that allows you to check the accuracy of your Social Security records.

You can call Social Security at 800-772-1213, or visit their website at www.ssa.gov. You may request a Personal Earnings and Benefits Estimate Statement (Form SSA-7004). Once you complete the request online, or print the form and mail it in, they’ll provide you with a yearly breakdown of salary credited to you since 1950. They’ll also include an estimate of benefits to be received by you when you retire.

Control Your Runaway Expenses and Still Have Fun

Personal Finance Control Your Runaway Expenses and Still Have Fun

Image:...

Personal Finance Control Your Runaway Expenses and Still Have Fun

For most of us, the cost of everything has risen ahead of our income. In some cases it may be more than costs that have risen; it may be your consumption. If you are looking for ways to control both rising expenses and increasing consumption, here are some timely suggestions.

The Roof Above and the Utilities Within

You are probably using more of your income for housing than in the past, but make sure you are getting the best rates available for both your mortgage and any equity loans, and that you are deducting every penny allowable under current Internal Revenue Service (IRS) rules. Shop around!

Review your home heating fuel consumption for the last 12–24 months and get on a budget plan that reflects true current prices. Lower fuel prices should not mean relaxing where insulation and conservation are concerned—check your insulation and trim another degree off the thermostat!

Check your local electric and water departments for free conservation programs and tips. Expect their rates to continue rising, and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. As with heating, remember to adjust the thermostat during air conditioning season.

Telephone service has added enhancement upon enhancement over the past few years. Ask yourself if you are really using all the new services, or if you have them because the ads are so convincing. Life without “call waiting” may be rather pleasant.

Shopping Sprees

Going to the “super” grocery store can be a great adventure. Make a shopping list of what you want. Get a special store card to scan for specials, clip some coupons, and grab a supermarket circular for specials. The use of lists, specials, and coupons can reduce your weekly food bill by up to 20%.

Clothing prices have gone out of control, but you have the power to bring them back into line by remembering one fact: The “Name” on the front, back, side, or anywhere else does not mean that the article of clothing will wear any better or any longer than the “No-Name” variety. Try this fact on for size and watch your clothing expenses fit with reality once more.

Healthy and Physically Fit

The added expense of a good fitness program can lead to better health and fewer visits to the doctor or chiropractor. In many cases, the sidewalk outside your home will work just as well as the fitness club down the street.

If your doctor agrees, shop “generic” when you need medications, and look for pharmacies that offer reduced rates on prescriptions; the same stores may even offer reduced prices on prescription eyewear needs.

The cost of cable television is something to behold, and the “necessity” of cable is a wonder of the modern age. An assessment of true cable usage may prove that all those marvelous channels are watched so infrequently that the “cost per view” is one that could be trimmed easily. Is it time to return to fewer channels and more trips to the library?

Pizzas and Videos

The cost of an afternoon or evening at the movies is another wonder of our times. It may be time to begin enjoying Friday nights at home with the family making pizzas and watching videos. Family game nights are another great option!

A meal out at a restaurant is not always a luxury. There are times when it becomes as necessary to personal survival as sleep. It does not need to have a luxury price tag, however “two-for-one” specials, and “kids eat free” are more common than ever before.

All the “little” expenses—banking fees, subscriptions, personal care, lottery tickets and such—can creep up gradually to create a new Godzilla ready to devour the best-laid spending plans. Analyze all of them and see which are truly necessities.

The final budget-busting monster of the modern age is the credit card, with its associated annual fees and finance charges. Get credit card debt paid off, or at least under control.

Expenses have increased, and your income may not have kept pace with them. You also may have fallen prey to spending patterns that have made increased consumption and deficit financing a way of life. If your expenses have run away, rein them in today for a comfortable, more secure future. The “runaway train” of debt can, indeed, be stopped before it derails!

Disability Income Insurance—Policy Considerations

Insurance Disability Income Insurance—Policy Considerations

Image: http://www.retirementdoctor.com/advisors/LibertyArticles/images/1101image13.jpg...

Insurance Disability Income Insurance—Policy Considerations

Imagine what would happen if your ability to earn income were to suddenly disappear. What would your life be like? Even though your income would abruptly stop, your living expenses would continue. The mortgage and car payments would be due—missing several payments could result in foreclosure or repossession. You and your family would still have to eat, use electricity, heat your home, etc. How would you cope?

The best way to protect yourself from the financial harm that a disability can cause may be to purchase disability income insurance. Disability income insurance is designed to replace lost income in the event that a disabling illness or injury prevents you from working. It can make an enormous difference at a time when you should be focused on your health and recovery, not on how your bills are going to be paid.

Key Policy Features

When selecting an individual disability income policy, the following coverage areas are important to check:

Definition of disability Policy definitions can vary. Does the policy define disability as the inability to perform your own job or any job? Select a policy that will pay benefits when you are unable to work in your occupation or one appropriate for your education and experience.
Extent of coverage Are benefits available for total or for partial disability? Are full benefits paid for loss of sight, speech, hearing, or use of limbs whether or not you are able to work? Does the policy cover both accidents and illness?
Amount of monthly benefit What percentage of income will the benefit replace? Most insurers limit benefits from all sources to 70% or 80% of net monthly income.
Waiting period Will benefits begin 30, 60, or 90 days, or even six months, after the onset of the disability? The longer the waiting period, the lower your premiums will be.
Duration of benefits Are benefits payable for one, two, or five years, to age 65, or for a lifetime? Most people need a benefit period that covers their working years—at least to age 65 or normal retirement age.
Inflation rider Does the policy offer a cost-of-living adjustment? This important rider should always be considered, because as the cost of living continuously increases you will want your benefit to keep pace with inflation.
Renewability Is the policy noncancelable, guaranteed renewable, or conditionally renewable? A noncancelable policy will continue in force at the same premiums and benefits, as long as you pay timely premiums; a guaranteed renewable policy will be automatically renewed for an entire class of policyholders, but the premiums may be increased; optionally or conditionally renewable policies are extended each anniversary or premium due date if the company decides to do so.
Waiver of premiums How long must you be disabled before premiums are waived? Under most policies, you won’t have to pay any more premiums after you have been disabled for 90 days.
Option to buy more coverage Can coverage be increased without further evidence of insurability?

Early and thorough disability insurance planning can help ensure you have the coverage you need before you need it.

Steps to Help Achieve Estate Success

Estate Planning Steps to Help Achieve Estate Success

For many people, more time and attention may be devoted to building an estate than in planning...

Estate Planning Steps to Help Achieve Estate Success

For many people, more time and attention may be devoted to building an estate than in planning for its ultimate disposition. Understandably, enjoying the fruit of your labors is generally far more interesting than planning for what might happen when you are no longer around.

Unfortunately, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is very interested in your estate, and has made certain that lack of (or improper) estate planning could (at the very least) create headaches for your heirs, and, more importantly, could cost the estate money in terms of unnecessary estate taxes. Here are six basic estate planning strategies that can help you gain control and avoid some unnecessary pitfalls:

1 Keep Good Records. When you die, the first thing your heirs will have to do is sort out your financial affairs. You can help them by maintaining good records and letting them know where to find your will, insurance policies, bank statements, and other important documents.

2 Have an Up-to-Date Will. A will is perhaps the most basic legal estate planning document, specifying how your property is to be distributed at your death and naming guardians for minor children. In addition, it appoints an executor who will coordinate (usually with an attorney) the process of probate, the preparing and filing of final income and estate tax returns, and the distribution of assets. Without a will, the state will determine the distribution of assets according to state inheritance laws.

3 Beyond Your Will. A will deals with your estate after you die. However, incapacity during your lifetime may affect your ability to make financial and health care decisions. A durable power of attorney designates someone to make financial decisions on your behalf in the event of incapacity. A living will spells out your wishes for the use of life-sustaining measures if you are incapacitated. A health care proxy (also known as a medical power of attorney) gives someone else the right to make important health care decisions on your behalf under specified conditions. A complete estate plan encompasses both lifetime and post-mortem planning.

4 Take Advantage of the Applicable Exclusion Amount. In 2008, each taxpayer has a $2,000,000 combined gift and estate tax applicable exclusion amount (scheduled to increase to $3.5 million in 2009 based on the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA)) that can be applied to exempt from transfer taxation assets given away during lifetime or passed on to heirs at death. Individuals with large estates who leave everything to their spouse forfeit the use of their exemption and run the risk of having some assets unnecessarily taxed at the second death (assuming the survivor’s estate is not consumed and continues to grow), because the surviving spouse can only use his or her own exemption. The use of trusts can help minimize this problem for large estates. (Note: All gift and estate taxes are scheduled for full repeal in 2010 under the new law; however, due to obscure budgetary rules, all provisions contained in EGTRRA will “sunset,” or automatically expire, in 2011, thus effectively reinstating the current transfer tax levies absent additional action by Congress in the interim.)

5 Use the Annual Gift Tax Exclusion. Everyone can give away up to $12,000 per year in 2008 ($24,000 in the case of joint gifts made by husband and wife) to an unlimited number of recipients tax free. For individuals with large estates, a planned giving strategy using this exclusion may be an attractive way to remove assets that are appreciating in value from the estate, which would otherwise have the potential to increase estate taxes if left in the estate.

6 Make Proper Life Insurance Beneficiary Arrangements. Life insurance kept in an estate owned by the decedent or in which the decedent has incidents of ownership is includable in the gross estate for purposes of calculating estate taxes when properly structured. An irrevocable life insurance trust removes the insurance proceeds from potential estate tax exposure.

By planning in advance, your wishes for property distribution can be executed. However, it is essential that you consult with a qualified financial professional to ensure that your planning is consistent with your goals and objectives.

Education Planning Boy? Girl? Or Tuition Payment?

You just received the wonderful news that you and your spouse are going to become parents. Thoughts of the many adventures parenting will bring are swirling through your head. The last thing on your mind may be paying for college, but thinking about it now may save you later. The cost of a four-year degree at a private college can easily exceed $120,000 (Source: Trends in College Pricing—2007, The College Board).

However, even if you are aware of the importance of saving for an education, you may be unsure of available options. The following is an exploration of the most common college savings vehicles:

529 Plans. 529 plans come in two forms—prepaid tuition plans and college savings plans. Prepaid tuition plans allow you to buy future tuition at today’s prices. College savings plans, on the other hand, offer tax benefits and a variety of investment options. Earnings grow tax-deferred, and qualified withdrawals are tax free. Nonqualified withdrawals are subject to income tax, as well as a 10% federal income tax penalty.

Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESAs, formerly known as Education IRAs). You can contribute $2,000 annually to an ESA, and funds may be used to pay for elementary and secondary education, in addition to college expenses. One major advantage of Coverdell ESAs is that if the funds are used to pay for qualified education expenses (e.g., room and board), earnings will not be taxed. Certain income limits may apply.

Series EE Savings Bonds. These types of savings bonds usually can be purchased and/or redeemed at your local bank. They are issued in denominations that are half of the bond’s face value ranging from $50 to $10,000. For example, a $50 bond would cost $25. Depending on your income tax bracket, EE savings bonds may offer state and local tax-deductible interest. When used for qualified education expenses, interest may be free of state and federal taxes, as well. However, they are generally subject to federal income tax and early redemption penalties may apply if the bond is redeemed in the first five years. Another possible advantage to savings bonds is that they may be purchased by anyone for your child, for any occasion.

Uniform Gifts to Minors Act (UGMA) and Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA). UGMA and UTMA accounts are custodial accounts. You may make unlimited contributions to such accounts, and the funds may be used for whatever purchases you deem appropriate. The UGMA account is particularly useful if you are considering purchasing stocks or mutual funds for your child to help save for education. More specifically, UGMA typically authorizes the transfers of cash, bank accounts, stocks, and mutual funds to minors without the need for an attorney; an UTMA account authorizes expanded transfers, including real estate, and royalties. For both UGMA and UTMA accounts, a portion of the earnings may be tax free or taxed at the child’s rate, generally a lower figure. You may make unlimited contributions to such accounts, and the funds may be used for whatever purchases you deem appropriate.

The last option you might consider when saving for your child’s future education may be a simple bank savings account. Although bank savings accounts may offer immediate liquidity and versatility, there are no tax advantages, and given their low risk, the earning potential is very low. Therefore, when it comes to saving for education, it may not be the most beneficial choice.

Start Now

So, if you are wondering whether you should begin saving for your child’s education now, the answer is, yes. Regardless of which option you choose, beginning today to save for a child’s education will help ensure your child a more secure tomorrow.

BUsiness Owner Solo Opportunities: One-Person 401(k)s

Entrepreneurs succeed by taking advantage of business opportunities, and in order to prepare for a secure retirement, they need to pursue the options that offer greatest potential. For small business owners with no employees, recent tax law changes make the one-person 401(k) one of the most attractive planning tools.

The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA)* gave a boost to one-person 401(k) plans by increasing the contribution limits, allowing self-employed workers to save more for retirement. With these tax law changes, the one-person 401(k) may be more beneficial to highly compensated self-employed individuals than some of the more traditional offerings, such as Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plans and Savings Incentive Match Plans for Employees (SIMPLEs).

A Boost for Saving

If you are a participant in a one-person 401(k), you may be eligible to make elective salary deferrals, as well as take a business deduction for profit-sharing contributions. Contributions reduce your taxable income. An entrepreneur who runs a small business with no employees may take a deduction for up to 25% of his or her salary with up to $230,000 (subject to inflation indexing) of compensation eligible for consideration, and may elect to defer a portion of his or her salary up to specified limits ($15,500 in 2008). The combination of your profit-sharing and salary-deferred contributions may not exceed $46,000 in 2008 (subject to inflation indexing). Those age 50 and older may make additional “catch-up” contributions of up to $5,000. Prior to reform by EGTRRA, participants were allowed only a 15% profit-sharing deduction and were not eligible to also make elective deferrals.

A Case Study

For illustrative purposes, consider the following hypothetical case study. Sarah Foster, age 45, has an adjusted earned income of $100,000 as a self-employed software consultant. As the owner of her own corporation with no employees, she takes a profit-sharing deduction for her contributions to a one-person 401(k) for 25% of her eligible compensation, totaling $25,000. In addition, Sarah elects to defer $14,000 of her salary to her 401(k), bringing the total of her contributions to $39,000. That’s significantly more than she could save with another plan, such as a SIMPLE that has an elective deferral limit of $10,500 in 2008.

The Benefits Continue

One-person 401(k)s offer benefits in addition to the increased contribution limits. Because there are no other employees, a one-person 401(k) avoids nondiscrimination testing, and these plans are relatively simple and inexpensive. Depending on your particular circumstances, you may be able to roll a qualified plan into a one-person 401(k). Earnings have the opportunity to grow on a tax-deferred basis and, if necessary, you may take a loan subject to the limitations of your plan. Bear in mind that withdrawals made before the age of 59½ may be subject to a 10% federal income tax penalty.

With favorable tax reform currently in effect, the one-person 401(k) offers today’s entrepreneur unprecedented opportunities to prepare for retirement. The sooner you get started, the better.

*According to The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, favorable retirement incentives had been set to expire in 2011. Thanks to the Pension Protection Act signed into law on August 17, 2006, many of these provisions have been made permanent.

It’s right around the corner.<O:p</O:p
Now is the time to plan for the Big E and the maintenance of your vehicle at Raffia Road Service Center and Spring Street Service Center. You can drop your car off in the morning on your way to the fair.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
While you are at the Big E, we will work on your vehicle and have it ready for you by the end of the day. We will help you complete that part of your ‘to do’ list.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
This year, the “ Great New England’s Fair” will be held from September 12- 28 in West Springfield at the Eastern States Exposition. It is the sixth largest agricultural fair in the country, and the largest in New England. <O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
The fair serves as the state fair for each of the six New England states. Connecticut has its own special celebration on Wednesday, September 17.
<O:p</O:p
During the Big E, why not make an appointment to have your vehicle serviced while you are enjoying the exhibits, parades, baked potatoes and the famous Big E Cream Puffs?
</O:p
There will be commuter buses running directly from Windsor to the Big E .That way you will be preparing your car for the change of seasons and celebrating New England.

Spring Street Service Center, located at 436 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, CT, is a full service automotive facility meeting the automotive needs of North Central Connecticut and beyond. If you have any questions, please call 860-627-7495.
For over 9 years - Clark’s cartoon alter ego has been only seen from the “rear”!
<O:p</O:p
He has been on every logo, shirt, cup, sweatshirt, business card, hat, advertisement, signs, mug, etc. No one - has ever seen his face! So, it was decided that it is time that he shows his face to his public.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
Can you find Clark? - he is famous on Cable! Debunking those who said “Clark has a face for radio,” you can see Clark hard at work on Cox Cable channels AMC, APL, BRVO, CMT, CNBC, FAM, HIST, TRAV, & TVL throughout the coming months. What we need to know is if you have seen the ad and if there are any reports of cracked television screens.<O:p</O:p
<O:p</O:p
Send us an email and let us know what channel you saw Clark on and if you think he should reconsider his stint in show business (his alter ego that is).

If you want to see Clark in person, please stop by Raffia Road Service Center, 105 Raffia Road, Enfield, CT 06082, or Spring Street Service Center, 436 Spring Street, Windsor Locks, CT 06096<O:p</O:p

Business Women of Southern New England was created in 2007 to serve the needs of women in business in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. Our goal is to provide networking, mentoring and educational opportunities for women, whether they are self-employed or working in a management role in their company. Some of our recent education topics included gender communication, working in a man’s world: women in untraditional industries, making networking work for you, and knowing your customer. For our 2008-2009 year, we are planning to continue to bring dynamic speakers to our members so we can all continue to learn and grow together. We are also working toward becoming the NAFE affiliate for this area.

The Coming Retirement Boom
A new era has dawned that economists and policymakers have been anticipating for years with a mixture of curiosity and trepidation: The first baby boomers will turn 62, become eligible for Social Security benefits, and usher in an unprecedented long–term shift in the balance between working and retired Americans.

Opinions about what to expect from this new era differ in various quarters. Boomers who are financially prepared are likely anticipating some of the best years of their lives. But some economists are expecting this period to usher in an economic slowdown.1 And U.S. policymakers are wondering how the government will meet its obligations to the roughly 78 million baby boomers who will be retiring over the next two decades and beyond.2
Fewer Workers, More Retirees

The Census Bureau projects that growth in the working–age population, which grew at a 2.25% annual rate from 1970 to 2006, will slow to an annual rate below 1% between 2007 and 2017.3 The expected drop in the number of available workers, combined with the possibility that many boomers will consume less in retirement because they will have less money than in their working years, could result in a significant economic slowdown.

At the same time, the growth in the number of people aged 65 and older is expected to accelerate to an average of 2.8% per year.4 By 2017, it is projected that tax revenues flowing into Social Security will fall short of the program’s obligations.5 Because Social Security pays benefits from current tax revenues, benefit cuts and higher taxes are possible.
The American X Factor

One issue that doesn’t receive much attention is how the U.S. population will react to the challenges we face. The U.S. economy has proven to be the most adaptive and flexible the world has ever seen. Boomers may be healthy and willing to stay in the workforce well past age 65. Our rapidly increasing worker productivity could help a smaller workforce offset the lost manpower.

It may actually be quite interesting to see how our country will surmount its demographic woes. Meanwhile, it is more important than ever to remain focused on working toward your own financial goals.
